Garrett O'Donnell, Head Coach

Garrett O’Donnell is the head coach at Glenelg Country School in Howard County, Maryland where he just finished his second season at the helm of the Dragons.  In just one season the Dragons improved from 6-20 to 21-9.  On the way to setting a school record for MIAA A Conference wins in a season, O’Donnell also led the Dragons to a Big Apple Shootout win in New York and the school’s first Maryland Independent School Tournament Championship.

O’Donnell came to Glenelg Country School following two seasons as Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.  Prior to that O’Donnell was the Head Coach at the Maret School in Washington, DC where he turned the perennial cellar dwellers into a District heavyweight.  O’Donnell’s teams posted 115 wins in his six seasons as the head boys basketball coach and lead the MAC in scoring defense five of those years.

Coach O’Donnell lead Maret to the Final Four of the D.C. State Basketball Tournament in 2014 & 2015 and finished as regular season and postseason champions of the Mid-Atlantic Conference his final three seasons.  Prior to O’Donnell’s five championship banners in six years, Maret had won one in the previous century.  Along with earning Top 10 rankings in the Washington Post each of his last four years, Coach O’Donnell was named Coach of the Year by DCSportsFan.com in 2013.

Prior to his success in Washington, DC, O'Donnell spent six years at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia as an assistant to Coach Joe Wooten. During that time Bishop O’Connell won three Virginia state titles and one Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship.  It was his experience at Bishop O’Connell and the Coach Wooten Basketball Camp where O’Donnell learned what it takes to run a successful basketball program and camp.  O’Donnell takes great pride in being a member of the Wooten basketball family and cherishes his education under both Joe and Morgan Wooten.

O'Donnell began his coaching career in Baltimore at Cardinal Gibbons under Bob Flynn.  O’Donnell played for Flynn at St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he was the three-time Defensive Player of the Year and 1998 Male Athlete of the Year having competed for the Seahawks in both soccer and basketball.  Prior to moving to Maryland, O’Donnell was a Milwaukee native and went to Dominican High School where he was a member of the 1991 Metro Conference & State Championship basketball team.

In addition to being Head Coach at Glenelg Country School, O’Donnell is an Advancement & Communications Associate and teaches a Video Production class.
